O'Neil auditioned for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still at high school. She was able to advance to the top 100 round because the judges were thrilled by her vocal performances. Her performance was highly applauded by the judges. However, O'Neil suffered a significant loss during the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she was voted for in the bottom 3, top 3, and bottom 2. The judges were astonished by the outcome and urged viewers to show support for singers with impressive singing skills such as Melissa. O'Neil was consistently delivering stellar performances ever since, has never fell below the three top performers. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, in which O'Neil advanced into the final two of the finals of the competition, Werner said that in the morning, the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie as she became the third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
